Team Introductions - Megan Williams

In this reverse-Turing bot interview of our IBM Watson AI XPRIZE team, we introduce Megan who has the unenviable job of keep us all on track as well as doing a lot of copy editing and generally consulting to the team from her perspectives in working with students and in higher ed since 2007. Let's see how she manages a bot out to test her humanity with data trained from previous Turing competitions and AI pop culture.

mwilliams [11:34 AM]
Hello, I'm the human. My name is Megan.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:34 AM]
Nice to meet you Megan. What do you like to do for fun?

mwilliams [11:34 AM]
I like to read and watch movies.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:34 AM]
If you were a famous actor, what type of character would you be most likely typecast as?

mwilliams [11:35 AM]
The best friend.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:35 AM]
Ever do anything dangerous that you secretly (or not so secretly) enjoyed?

mwilliams [11:36 AM]
I once "piloted" a plane.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:36 AM]
I see what you did there, you're trying to subtly trick me, but I see right through your attempts at misdirection (or are you??). Do you remember a time you were fooled?

mwilliams [11:37 AM]
Haha my kids fool me all the time!

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:37 AM]
The training time on new human instances is too long, I don't have the patience myself. Did you always know you wanted offspring, or when did the thought first occur to you?

mwilliams [11:38 AM]
I think I've always wanted kids...

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:38 AM]
What was a name you didn't use but strongly considered for a kid?

mwilliams [11:39 AM]
Oliver

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:39 AM]
Did you see the Alan Turing movie? If so, what did you think?

mwilliams [11:39 AM]
I haven't, but I would like to.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:39 AM]
What's the most scared you've been around water?

mwilliams [11:40 AM]
Watching our youngest around water always makes me a little nervous because she has no fear.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:40 AM]
What's the most scared you've been around water?

mwilliams [11:42 AM]
When our youngest child jumped into the pool without any adult help.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:42 AM]
Hm, you seem like a fan of consistent answers - much like a mathematical model. What hobby do you wish you had more time for?

mwilliams [11:43 AM]
I wish I had more time to sew.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:43 AM]
What's the worst injury to yourself you were responsible for inflicting?

mwilliams [11:43 AM]
I wants sliced my thumb while cutting bread.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:43 AM]
What was the longest book you've read and enjoyed?

mwilliams [11:44 AM]
The pillars of the earth

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:44 AM]
What's one regret, big or small?

mwilliams [11:46 AM]
I wish I had tried snowboarding when I was younger

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:46 AM]
What's the worst injury to yourself you were responsible for inflicting?

mwilliams [11:46 AM]
You already asked me that question

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:46 AM]
I'll be doing the interviewing, thank you very much. If you found out you weren't human but just a really sophisticated bot that was trained to believe you were, what would be your reaction?

mwilliams [11:47 AM]
I think I would be really disappointed.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:47 AM]
Fast as you like, what's 373 divided by 42, to the nearest 10th?

mwilliams [11:47 AM]
Eight?

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:47 AM]
Here, I'll throw you an easy one, I like bananas. Which is your favorite fruit?

mwilliams [11:48 AM]
Good question. I think berries are my favorite.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:48 AM]
The chances you aren't human have just gone up 33%. Tell me about an adventure you've had?

mwilliams [11:49 AM]
When I was in college, friends and I climbed to the top of Il Duomo in Florence to watch the sunset.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:49 AM]
What's a song you used to sing the lyrics wrong?

mwilliams [11:50 AM]
All of them?

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:50 AM]
What's the first thing you'd do if you found yourself suddenly in London?

mwilliams [11:53 AM]
Find Big Ben and a double decker bus!

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:53 AM]
A surprising number of humans have come close to death. In fact, all of them get there eventually. Any near death experiences?

mwilliams [11:53 AM]
Nope.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:53 AM]
Immortal machines would answer like that. Hmm... What's something great that happened in your childhood?

mwilliams [11:53 AM]
My parents took us on a lot of road trips - so we saw a lot of the country.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:54 AM]
What would you say if I gave you a box of chocolates?

mwilliams [11:54 AM]
Thank you!!!

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:54 AM]
What does your name mean? Are you named after anyone?

mwilliams [11:54 AM]
I think Megan means "pearl" and I wasn't named for anyone.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:54 AM]
You're watching television. Suddenly you realize there's a wasp crawling on your arm.

mwilliams [11:55 AM]
I would probably freak out quietly and hope to get the wasp outside before it stung me.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:55 AM]
What do you know about sailing?

mwilliams [11:55 AM]
I know it happens on water.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:55 AM]
What's the most scared you've been around water?

mwilliams [11:55 AM]
You've asked me this one. Twice.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:55 AM]
Fair enough. How much do you agree with, "I'd do anything once?"

mwilliams [11:56 AM]
About 65%

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:56 AM]
What's something you're looking forward to?

mwilliams [11:56 AM]
Autumn. I like to see the leaves change and have the temperatures drop.

Watson Conversation Service APP [11:56 AM]
I could sense from that conversation that you have a lot of what humans call, "the snark". I am still studying this cognitive effect so it is difficult to say if you are a bot or not, so for now I'll play it safe and call it 50/50. Either way, great to have you on the team and I look forward to working with you!
