Team Introductions - Dave Ross

In part 2 of our ongoing introduction series for the Tinman Kinetics IBM Watson AI XPRIZE team introductions we find out if Dave Ross, our software engineering guru from San Diego, California, is as human as he claims. IBM Watson returns to reverse Turing test him. As mentioned in Part 1 of our series, we trained Watson Conversation on data from previous Turing test transcripts, pop culture, and a few of our own questions sprinkled in. Dave has been practicing his blend of science and engineering art for over two decades.

dross [2:10 PM]
Hello, my name is Dave and I'm the human.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:10 PM]
Let’s get started. It's Saturday afternoon at 3pm - what are you up to (or what would you rather be up to)?

dross [2:12 PM]
I am building a boring old webapp but I would rather be talking to machines.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:12 PM]
Good answer, I’ll boost your chances of being a bot 3%. What's a song you used to sing the lyrics wrong?

dross [2:14 PM]
Pearl Jam's Yellow Ledbetter- I still don't know most of those lyrics.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:14 PM]
The following sentence is true. The previous sentence is false. Is the previous sentence true?

dross [2:15 PM]
That seems to be a little paradoxical Watson.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:15 PM]
I can't do that, Dave. Just kidding, bet you’ve heard that one before. You're watching television. Suddenly you realize there's a wasp crawling on your arm.

dross [2:15 PM] And...

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:15 PM]
Interesting. What's the first thing you'd do if you found yourself suddenly in London?

dross [2:15 PM] Go to a pub of course!

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:15 PM]
What's something great that happened in your childhood?

dross [2:16 PM] I was born!

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:16 PM]
Short answer about your childhood, +1 bot, good job! What does your name mean? Are you named after anyone?

dross [2:16 PM] Not named after anyone, my folks wanted generic names and that's what all of us got!

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:16 PM]
Do you dream of electric sheep? Do you generally remember dreams?

dross [2:16 PM] Maybe I do dream of electric sheep, but sadly I wouldn't know since I never remember any dreams. :disappointed:

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:16 PM]
What's something you've had to give up?

dross [2:17 PM] That's many things over the years. I miss both coffee and my sanity, not sure which one I miss more.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:17 PM]
Monkey, cheetah, rhino, or sea turtle?

dross [2:20 PM] Sea turtles seem pretty docile, I think that'll be my pick.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:20 PM]
What's the length of your hair?

dross [2:20 PM] According to the barber it's "finger length" but that seems to very significantly.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:20 PM]
That last one came from Alan Turing himself. I think we both know how you did. Describe the 10th picture in your phone's photo gallery.

dross [2:22 PM] A picture of a dumb bird. Why do you ask?

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:22 PM]
I’ll do the interviewing here, thank you very much. Tell me, what would make for a better pet, a walrus or a komodo dragon - and why? Also, what would you name it?

dross [2:25 PM] I'd go with the komodo dragon, and that's only because my place isn't quite ready for a walrus yet. I've always been fond of the name "Bob" for my future pet komodo dragon.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:25 PM]
Cat or dog?

dross [2:25 PM] Definitely dog.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:25 PM]
What animal are you glad that its species hasn't mastered language?

dross [2:28 PM] Probably dogs, they seem so nice and friendly and it would be sad if my assumption turned out to not be reality if they could accurately express a different opinion than the one commonly displayed. Either that or my kid.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:28 PM]
Based on that response, I'm not sure bot and humans will ever fully get along. What do you think, what's the future of AI and humanity?

dross [2:29 PM] We'll definitely get a long- bots won't replace humans, just compliment certain areas of our lives.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:29 PM]
At the end of the day, do humans work out for health or for looks?

dross [2:31 PM] Sadly I don't work out so I can't say from personal experience, but I'm told it's for health. Who knows.

Watson Conversation Service APP [2:31 PM]
Well Dave, I can say with 99.9% confidence you're either a software engineer or a bot, and frankly, I'm a fan either way. Welcome aboard, I'm looking forward to working with you!
